Hogan Transfer & Storage had the unique opportunity to move the Elizabeth Sage Historic Costume Collection to it’s new home on the Indiana University Bloomington Campus in early December. The collection was founded in 1937 by Elizabeth Sage, the first professor of clothing and textiles at Indiana University, who on her retirement donated her private collection. She had traveled extensively and collected costumes and textiles to use as teaching aids for her course studies. The collection is composed of two parts: a museum quality collection for exhibition and research; and a study collection used in classrooms and studios. The Sage Collection includes garments designed by Hoosier natives Bill Blass and Norman Norell.
The project required five days and involved the disassembly and reassembly of 105 sections of specialized racking, and relocation of 1200+ acid free containers of collection artifacts to maintain in numerical order, 58 rolling racks of clothing and offices for curators and staff. Since the containers included artifacts dating back to the 1800’s, Curators Kathleen Rowold and Kelly Richardson, were concerned about the handling and maintaining the integrity of the collection. Hogan’s past experience moving the Indiana State Museum, and collections for the Eiteljorg and Indianapolis Children’s Museums gave the Sage staff the confidence their relocation would be handled professionally. The relocation also proved educational to our crew since most had not seen clothing and accessories from earlier time periods.
As a member of the Commercial Relocation Network, Hogan’s experience with museum collections is representative of the broad base of services available to CRN clients across the United States and Canada.
